Cuccaro Vetere

Cuccaro Vetere still preserves the aspect of a medieval fortification, perched as it is on the summit of a hill that guards the Lambro valley, at 629 meters above sea level: the ruins of the walls and those of Castle, built around 1200. This small and characteristic village, located in the heart of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, was once part of the four "Norman lands" that made up the Barony of Novi, then it was suffeudo and independent feud. Capital of the homonymous State, in addition to Cuccaro and the joint farmhouse of Laureto, up to 1404 it included Abatemarco, Castinatelli, Eremiti, Butani, Massiccelle, Montano, S. Mauro la Bruca and S. Nazario.
The toponym Cuccaro is of Greek derivation and means "cucuzzolo", while Vetere comes from the Latin and means "ancient". The name suggests its strategic position which, in ancient times, made it an ideal refuge and one of the main points of reference for the defense of the Greek Elea.
Cuccaro boasts the existence of a museum, unique in its kind, the "Itinerant Museum of Rural Civilization", where it is possible to find extremely important testimonies about the places and the local history.
The town of Cuccaro is ideal for those wishing to spend a few days relaxing, being able to have wonderful places and a splendid panoramic view of the entire valley, up to the Gulf of Palinuro, whose lighthouse is clearly visible, especially in the evenings in the summertime. The visitor will also be pleasantly surprised by the hospitality of its inhabitants and by the genuineness of some typical dishes, such as those based on chestnuts; in fact, it is recalled that in Cuccaro the chestnut has characterized, since ancient times, the economy of the place making it known throughout the region.
