Perito

The territory in which Perito is located is enclosed between the valley of Orria and the course of the River Alento, and boasts an enviable view, stretching from Monte Sacro (or Gelbison) to the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the tower of Velia, the ancient homeland of Zeno and Parmenides, to Monte Stella, not to mention the splendid scenery of the Amalfi coast that can be seen at night in a sparkle of lights.
The toponym seems to derive from the Latin word "Pirus" (“pear tree”) probably referring to the cultivation of this fruit plant in the area. The town was once named "Perito di Sottano”, the adjective “Sottano” (located below), was used to distinguish the other inhabited center built, later, higher up for defensive reasons. During the Lombard reign, the became a direct property of the crown, then with the arrival of the Aragonese domination, King sold Perito for 3,000 ducats, (together with Novi, Gioi, Magliano, Cuccaro and other houses), to Berengario Carafa, thus constituting the State of Gioi.
Natural and uncontaminated environments still make the town of Perito, a place of enchanting beauty: every corner of the town preserves a suggestive aura of mystery, memories and contrasts that are jealously preserved by the locals. The amazing eighteenth-century buildings are full of history and each one of them has a different story to narrate.
