Torre Orsaia

The town of Torre Orsaia is located on the southern area of the province of Salerno, within the territory of the National Park of Cilento. It is an agricultural center set on some hills sloping towards the sea among centuries-old olive groves. The territory consists mainly of limestone and dolomite; the vegetation is composed by Mediterranean scrub, the climate is mild, typically Mediterranean, the hydrographic surface is poor. The only water stream located in this area is the Bussento, along whose route it is possible to observe some interesting karst phenomena. Numerous streams from the short and precipitous course meet and deeply affect the territory.
The town of Torre Orsaia underwent considerable development during the 13th century, when the princes of Salerno donated the Torrese territory to the Episcopal table of Policastro. In fact, the curia built a seminary there, then closed in 1785, around which the people of the nearby countryside began to gather, encouraged to move even from the compensation of a small plot of land. Subsequently Torre Orsaia became part of the county of Policastro, following its alternate fates.
The small hamlet Castel Ruggero, perched on the slopes of Mount Centaurino, dates back to 1055 and so as the castle built by Ruggero d’Altavilla to defend the town from the attacks by the Count of Laurito. The center has preserved its medieval layout and, from the highest point it is possible to experience a magnificent view over the entire Gulf of Policastro.
