Laureana Cilento

The Municipality of Laureana Cilento is situated at 420 m above sea level and has a hilly area. The name Laureana probably derives from "laure", from the name of the cells of the Basilian monks who, after the fall of the Roman Empire, arrived in these lands. It seems that the first inhabited nucleuses have risen just around the degrees. The current Municipality of Laureana Cilento consists of the capital where the Town Hall is located, the hamlets of Archi, Matonti and San Martino.
The latter, of medieval origin, winds along the provincial road. Considered the "Salotto" of Laureana, its squares offer wonderful panoramic points. The village of Matonti consists of four farmhouses: Spinelli, Casaliello, Vetrali and Matonti. To signal the visitor the Church of San Biagio, the Bambacaro Palace characterized by an original and characteristic Tower and the Feudal Palace lying in the farmhouse of Vetrali, today belonging to the Materazzi family.
The territory of Laureana boasts numerous vineyards, olive groves and ficheti. The upper area of the hamlet of San Martino has almost a sort of frame of chestnut and oak trees. It is possible to walk through the woods surrounding the town of San Martino as far as the chief town of Laureana through the paths of San Francesco and San Michele. At the entrance of Laureana is the equipped area of San Lorenzo.
From the heights of Laureana Cilento you overlook the Acropolis and by sliding your gaze you can cross the Gulf of Salerno: with a watchful eye and time permitting, you can also find the splendid island of Capri.
