Laurito

Laurito is a small town located deep within the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburniat the foot of Mount Fulgenti, in the upper valley of the Mingardo river, at an altitude of about 500 metres above sea level. This municipality is immersed in a very varied territory consisting of Mediterranean scrub (at lower altitudes), centuries-old olive groves, chestnut groves and, beech forests in the mountain area. The origins of Laurito date back to the period of the Greek-Byzantine colonization of the lands of southern Italy, around the 10th century. Ancient documents testify that, around the year one thousand, Laureto was a "Castrum", that is a castle that depended directly on the king, whose function was above all military defense against Saracen incursions. Many other citations of the village can be found in the Angevine registers, concerning some negotiations that Prince Charles had with King James of Aragon. From 1300 onwards the town came under the dominion of the Sanseverino family. The Sanseverinos were then forced to start a dispute with the Monforte family, which claimed the possession of the fiefdom, but in the end it was the Monforte family who prevailed.
