Rutino

The first mention to this village dates back to February 1053, in a deed of sale, in which a small village called “Rutigini". The same name can be found in a donation of 1092 with which Gregorio, lord of Capaccio, donated to the monastery of S. Nicola the Church of S. Matthew of "Ruticino". The village may have been created by Greek colonists, a hypothesis supported by the short distance from both Elea and Paestum.
According to a popular legend, in 954, during the transport of the relics of the apostle St. Matthew from the plain of Casal Velino to that of Paestum, the travellers stopped there because they were thirsty and a water stream suddenly appeared.
The hamlet of Rutino was part of the territory of the Barony of Cilento owned by the Sanseverinos. In 1535, Ferrante Sanseverino sold Rutino together with Torchiara and Copersito to Francesco De Rogerio of Salerno. In 1661, the Casale together with the castle of Rocca belonged to the Garofalo family. The Marquis Marco Garofalo in 1738 sold Rocca to the Marquis Granito preserving the domain of Rutino.
From 1811 to 1860, under the name Rotino, it was part of the district of Torchiara, belonging to the District of Vallo of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. From 1860 to 1927, under the Kingdom of Italy it was part of the district of Torchiara, belonging to the District of Vallo della Lucania.
